The sudden evacuation of the UK Ijtima event in Suffolk last weekend has left a trail of uncertainty and concern among organisers, attendees, and the wider community. The alleged extreme right-wing threat that prompted police to intervene had cast a dark shadow over what was intended to be a peaceful celebration of faith and unity. As the investigation unfolds, eight more individuals have been released from custody, bringing the total number of those freed without charge or on bail to ten.
The Metropolitan Police's ongoing probe has seen extensive searches of homes and vehicles yield over 35 digital devices seized by officers as part of their inquiries. Seven men have been released without charge, while one individual was let go on bail under strict conditions pending further investigation. This brings the total number of those freed to ten, with four other individuals previously released on bail in connection with the case.
Meanwhile, a 42-year-old man has been charged with two counts of possession of offensive weapons – specifically extendable batons and a stun gun – but these charges are not believed to be connected to the alleged threat against the UK Ijtima event. He was remanded in custody and appeared at Reading Magistrates' Court on Monday.
Commander Helen Flanagan, head of Counter-Terrorism Policing London, has acknowledged that the investigation has been fast-moving since information about a potential threat emerged. While Commander Flanagan reassured the public that inquiries are ongoing and further action will be taken if any offences or threats are identified, she also underscored that no evidence has yet been found to support charging anyone directly linked to the alleged threat.
The UK Ijtima event, which began on Friday, 10 July 2026, was intended to conclude on Sunday afternoon. However, it was abruptly shut down at 07:00 BST on its final day following police advice. Armed officers were deployed, roads were closed, and assistance was provided to evacuate the estimated 15,000 guests from around the world who had gathered for the event.
