Eilish McColgan's Commonwealth title defence has been thrown into disarray after a cruel blow: the Scottish star athlete will miss the Glasgow Games with a nagging toe injury that just won't heal. The reigning 10,000m champion had been touted to defend her crown on Monday, but now faces an agonising wait to get back to full fitness.
McColgan's frustration is palpable as she confirmed the withdrawal, saying "Sadly, I won’t be competing at Glasgow 2026." Despite nearly ten weeks out of action, a full recovery in time for competitive racing in spikes proved impossible. McColgan had been making swift progress after her initial setback, but the limited timeframe since her first outdoor run a couple of weeks ago ultimately worked against her.
The news adds to a growing list of high-profile withdrawals from Glasgow 2026. Olympic heptathlon silver medallist Katarina Johnson-Thompson pulled out on Thursday due to a calf injury, while sprint star Dina Asher-Smith and 400m Olympic silver medallist Matt Hudson-Smith have also opted out. England's Olympic 800m champion Keely Hodgkinson had previously chosen not to compete, prioritising the European Championships.
The withdrawals aren't limited to British shores; St Lucia’s 100m Olympic champion Julien Alfred, Botswana’s Olympic 200m champion Letsile Tebogo, and Canadian swimming sensation Summer McIntosh have also bowed out. Instead of focusing on Glasgow, McIntosh will be heading to the Pan Pacific Swimming Championships.
Elinor Middlemiss, Team Scotland's Chef de Mission, has thrown her weight behind McColgan's decision. "We completely understand Eilish's commitment to prioritising her long-term health and ensuring she competes at an elite level," Middlemiss said, acknowledging the deep personal significance of defending a Commonwealth title on home soil for McColgan, who is a legend in Scottish sport.
