Swedish electric and autonomous trucking company Einride has announced its acquisition of EV charging startup Flipturn in an all-stock deal valued at $38 million, approximately £30 million. This marks Einride's first acquisition since becoming a publicly traded company and is a significant step in bolstering its electric vehicle (EV) charging infrastructure as it scales its electric trucking operations globally.
The acquisition, expected to finalise this month, will see Flipturn continue to operate with its current team of 17 employees. Founded in 2022, Flipturn has developed an advanced EV charging software platform capable of communicating with any EV charger using the industry-standard Open Charge Point Protocol. This technology allows for comprehensive monitoring of charging infrastructure health, integrates data such as vehicle battery levels, driving history, and routes to optimise charging management, and can also integrate with on-site solar and energy storage systems.
Roozbeh Charli, CEO of Einride, stated that the acquisition represents a "decisive step" in the company's scaling strategy, particularly in the US market. By integrating Flipturn's software, Einride aims to become a more vertically integrated company, offering customers not only electric trucks but also the essential charging software required to run them efficiently and reliably. This comprehensive offering is designed to appeal to businesses looking to transition to electric heavy-duty fleets but may be hesitant due to concerns about charging infrastructure and management.
Einride is recognised for its distinctive cabless autonomous pod-like trucks, though its primary revenue driver currently comes from its fleet of 200 heavy-duty electric trucks. These trucks are operated for major corporations including Heineken, PepsiCo, and Carlsberg Sweden, across Europe, North America, and the United Arab Emirates. The company, which debuted on Nasdaq last June, recently secured Amazon as a customer, providing trucks that Einride owns and manages through its Saga AI software for drivers within Amazon's Relay freight network.
The deal underscores a growing trend within the electric vehicle sector towards integrated solutions, where companies aim to control more aspects of the EV ecosystem. By combining electric truck provision with advanced charging management software, Einride positions itself to offer a compelling end-to-end service, potentially easing the transition for logistics companies looking to electrify their fleets and reduce their carbon footprint.
