Swedish electric and autonomous trucking company Einride announced on Tuesday its intention to purchase 500 Tesla Semis. These electric big rigs are slated to be made available to customers such as Amazon.

The integration of the Tesla Semis into Einride’s fleet will occur in phases over the next 24 months, with the process beginning in September. Einride will manage these vehicles using its Saga AI software, a platform designed to offer the benefits of electric trucks for freight transport without the burdens of ownership.

This deal has the potential to triple the size of Einride's current fleet, which operates approximately 200 heavy-duty electric trucks for companies including Heineken and PepsiCo. The Tesla Semis will be available to customers across North America, expanding Einride's electric freight network to key corridors in California, Georgia, New Jersey, and Texas.

Einride, which went public in June, is using a third party to finance the purchase of the Tesla Semis. The company stated that this could help convert about $800 million in "potential long-term annual recurring revenue under joint business plans with shippers" into actual revenue.

Why this matters: This deal could significantly expand Einride's electric freight network and potentially convert substantial long-term revenue for the company.
