This primary election is significant as Michigan is a battleground state, considered crucial for the Democratic party's ambition to regain control of the Senate in the November midterm elections. The victor of this primary will proceed to face Republican nominee Mike Rogers in November, to succeed the retiring Democratic senator Gary Peters.
El-Sayed, 41, campaigned on universal healthcare and reducing the influence of money in politics. Stevens, 43, presented herself as a pragmatic problem-solver, with her campaign receiving substantial outside funding, including from groups linked to the American Israel Public Affairs Committee (Aipac).
