Electric barbecues are experiencing a resurgence, with recent tests by Which? challenging the perception that they cannot deliver a classic smoky flavour.
The consumer organisation tested electric grills from brands including Ninja and Weber. The Ninja Woodfire grill features a side smoker box with wood pellets, while Weber's Lumin model produced charred food in tests.
According to professional chef James Adams, who has tested grills for Which? for over a decade, electric barbecues are easy to set up and use. He noted their compact size and suitability for smaller spaces like balconies or patios. Adams also suggested that manufacturers are investing in features such as rechargeable batteries to address the current need for constant mains connection.
Which? found that electric barbecues heat up quickly and maintain good cooking temperatures, reducing the need to constantly move food for even charring. This contrasts with gas barbecues, which can suffer from flare-ups and inconsistent heat.
