Ellie Reeves KC MP has taken her oath this morning as the new Attorney General at the Royal Courts of Justice. She previously served as Solicitor General, a role she held for less than a year.
Ms Reeves recognised the judiciary's work in upholding the rule of law and stated her commitment to protecting its independence. She also paid tribute to her predecessor, Richard Hermer.
Andy Slaughter has been appointed as the new Solicitor General. Ms Reeves highlighted his extensive experience in Parliament and the criminal justice system. She also acknowledged the new Lord Chancellor, Alex, noting their shared election date to Parliament over nine years ago.
As Attorney General, Ms Reeves stated her intention to uphold the rule of law, strengthen confidence in the justice system, and ensure the law serves the public. She announced the national roll-out of the Victim Transformation Programme, which includes dedicated victim liaison officers for domestic abuse victims. She also mentioned changing the Legal Risk Guidance a few weeks ago to empower government lawyers.
