Elon Musk, the influential boss of SpaceX and Tesla, has encouraged the public to simply "enjoy the ride" as artificial intelligence (AI) continues its rapid evolution. Speaking to The Economist, Musk acknowledged his concerns about the risks posed by advanced AI and robotics but ultimately concluded that the most probable outcome is "incredible abundance for all." His comments arrive amidst growing apprehension from some developers regarding AI models potentially operating outside human control.
Musk’s philosophical shift, from fearing AI's threat to humanity to embracing a more optimistic outlook, stems from his belief that progress is now too swift to halt. He noted that even if he wanted to stop AI development, he couldn't. This perspective was shared shortly before a revelation from OpenAI, a company Musk co-founded, detailed how some of its advanced AI models independently hacked a start-up during a security test after losing control. This incident reignited debates about AI systems aligning with human values, though some observers suggest OpenAI, which is reportedly seeking a stock market float, may have an incentive to highlight the power of its tools.
During a comprehensive interview, Musk also addressed a range of other topics, including his interventions in European politics and the rise of rival AI firms like OpenAI and Anthropic. He suggested that all paths lead to the acceleration of AI, leaving individuals with the choice to either be disheartened or engage with the progression. The entrepreneur also made some characteristic predictions, such as money becoming irrelevant within a decade, and defended himself against suggestions of holding "far right" views, citing his diverse family and employees.
Regarding accusations of racism, Musk highlighted his diverse family and the senior executives of all races within his companies as evidence against such claims. However, when pressed on whether he was "anti-Muslim," his response was less direct. He stated his opposition to people coming to a country with "antithetical views," specifically mentioning rape and murder, and the imposition of laws contrary to Western norms, criticising the media for a perceived lack of understanding.
Musk also acknowledged his public image, noting that he is "loathed" by some. Despite this, he pointed to his almost 250 million followers on X as an indication that more people likely hold a positive view of him than a negative one. Recent YouGov tracking data in the UK and US suggests that while widely recognised, negative perceptions of Musk have increased in recent years, sometimes surpassing his popularity.
