Elon Musk, the tech entrepreneur, has revealed ambitions to create a feature-length, AI-generated adaptation of Homer's epic poem, The Odyssey. Musk stated that his AI company's image and video generation tool, Grok Imagine, would produce a "historically accurate" version before the end of 2026. This announcement, made via a post on X, included a three-minute AI-generated clip depicting a scene between Odysseus and the nymph Calypso, which another user claimed was created with Grok Imagine.
The move follows months of public criticism from Musk directed at Christopher Nolan's recently released film adaptation of The Odyssey. Musk has taken particular issue with Nolan's casting decisions, specifically highlighting Lupita Nyong'o as Helen of Troy and Clytemnestra, and Elliot Page as Sinon. In January 2026, Musk posted on X, claiming Nolan had "lost his integrity" over Nyong'o's casting, and later in March, labelled the director an "anti-White racist," suggesting the casting was driven by a desire for awards. Nyong'o addressed the controversy in May, stating her support for Nolan's vision and the diverse cast, noting the mythological nature of the story.
Nolan's adaptation, which opened last week to strong critical and viewer reception, has already achieved a worldwide box office collection of £208 million (approximately $264 million). The film stars Matt Damon as Odysseus, Anne Hathaway as Penelope, and Tom Holland as Telemachus. The ensemble cast also features Robert Pattinson, Zendaya, Samantha Morton, and Charlize Theron among others. Nolan has largely dismissed the pre-release debates about historical accuracy as "irrelevant," telling The Telegraph that such conversations are premature before audiences have seen the film.
Musk's interest in a 'historically accurate' rendition extends to an earlier exchange where he expressed willingness to provide £79 million (approximately $100 million) to Mel Gibson for an Odyssey film. This proposed version, suggested by another X user, would feature "painstakingly historically accurate ships, armour, weapons, and casting, with all dialogue taken straight from the original poem and delivered in Homeric Greek." This highlights Musk's ongoing focus on perceived historical fidelity in cinematic adaptations of ancient narratives.
