Chelsea goalkeeper Emiliano Martinez has officially switched his squad number from 26 to 1. The change comes after the No. 1 jersey became available following Robert Sanchez's departure from the club.
Martinez initially chose the No. 26 shirt, a number famously worn by Blues legend John Terry. He reportedly discussed the significance of the number with Terry before joining Chelsea from Aston Villa in a £7.5m deal.
Despite making his debut against Brighton in the No. 26 shirt, Martinez has now opted for the more traditional goalkeeper's number. Chelsea has confirmed the switch, with Martinez set to wear No. 1 in Sunday's match against his former club, Arsenal.
In a gesture of goodwill to fans who have already purchased this season's shirt with 'Martinez' and No. 26, Martinez has offered to sign these jerseys. Supporters can bring their shirts, along with proof of purchase from the official Club Megastore or website, to Stamford Bridge by October 4 to arrange this.
