Energy UK has responded to the Government’s consultation on the zero emission vehicle (ZEV) mandate. Adam Berman, Director of Policy and Advocacy at Energy UK, stated that the future of driving is electric, with over two million electric cars on the road and new electric vehicles (EVs) becoming more affordable than petrol and diesel alternatives.
Berman highlighted that the ZEV Mandate is expected to deliver significant emissions reductions and underpin billions of pounds in investment across the economy. He noted that government data indicates UK car and van markets will exceed the ZEV Mandate requirements for 2025.
Energy UK warned that further policy changes, following recent dilutions of the Mandate’s flexibility mechanisms, threaten the viability of essential investments into low carbon technologies. The organisation stated that watering down the ZEV mandate could make the energy sector more expensive to operate, leading to increased electricity bills across the economy.
