A family of three, including two sons, were left shaken after being violently attacked by a group of England fans in Bristol city centre following the World Cup match on Monday. The incident occurred after the family, who wished to remain anonymous for their safety, had watched the match at a pub in the city centre with other Mexican supporters.

The father, who was wearing a Mexico shirt, and his sons, who were dressed in half-English, half-Mexico shirts, were 'pushed and pulled' and 'violently attacked' by at least three groups of people. The family had decided to walk home instead of taking a taxi, which the father described as 'horrendously expensive', despite feeling unsafe in the city centre.

'As soon as we started walking, we were set upon by at least three groups of people,' the father said. 'They started pulling our shirts, swearing at us, they tried to take my son's glasses off his face.' The family called the police, who were able to point out the groups to officers, but the attackers were not apprehended.

Avon and Somerset Police have launched an investigation into the incident, with a spokesperson saying: 'This is an awful incident which will have caused significant distress to the victims but, thankfully, they did not suffer significant physical injury.'

Why this matters: This incident highlights concerns about fan behaviour at public events and the need for greater safety measures to protect spectators, particularly those who may be targeted because of their nationality or appearance.
