England opener Emilio Gay will receive further treatment this week for a shoulder injury, as the team hopes he will be fit for the first Test against Pakistan, scheduled to begin on 19 August.
The 27-year-old left-hander retired hurt with the injury during a One-Day Cup game for Durham against Middlesex on Friday. He had a scan on Saturday and will now be assessed at Beckenham, where Pakistan is playing a warm-up match from Wednesday.
Gay will work with medical staff during the four-day warm-up game, but will not participate in the fixture. England has not called up additional batters as cover for Gay, with Ollie Pope already in the 16-strong squad as a reserve option.
The team has already made changes following Ben Stokes' retirement and a knee injury to Jacob Bethell. Jordan Cox will replace Bethell at number three, and Dan Lawrence will bat at six while also bowling off-spin.
Joe Root returns as full-time captain, with Marcus Trescothick serving as interim head coach before Stephen Fleming takes over for the winter tour of South Africa.
