England's pursuit of a series victory in the Metro Bank One-Day Series was derailed after a hamstring injury to captain Jos Buttler contributed to a 16-run loss against Sri Lanka at Headingley.
Sri Lanka set England a target of 322, largely due to a century from Kusal Mendis (121). England's chase began strongly with an opening stand of 143 between Ben Duckett (67) and Tom Banton (73).
Buttler was batting on 66 not out when he collapsed clutching his left leg, forcing him to retire hurt. At that point, England needed 68 runs from 75 balls with six wickets remaining. Although he later returned to the crease, struggling with the injury, England ultimately fell short, finishing on 305 for nine.
Dunith Wellalage's three-wicket burst was also significant for Sri Lanka. The win means the series is now level at 1-1, with a decider scheduled for Sunday at the Oval.
