English Whisky has secured protected Geographical Indication (GI) status, marking a significant development for the sector. This new status officially recognises English Whisky as a distinctive whisky category.
The industry has expanded to more than 70 distilleries, an increase from 46 in 2023, with bottles exported to over 30 countries. Industry estimates suggest that maturing stocks in casks across England are valued at approximately £1 billion.
Environment Secretary Dame Angela Eagle stated that this protected status acknowledges English Whisky's distinctive character and the expert craftsmanship involved in its production. Morag Garden, CEO of the English Whisky Guild, described securing GI status as a landmark achievement that will support future growth and international recognition.
English Whisky now joins Scotch, Welsh, and Irish whiskies as a recognised and protected category. To utilise this new status, producers must first be verified under HMRC’s Spirit Drink Verification Scheme.
