Rev Mariann Edgar Budde, the Episcopal bishop of Washington DC, has announced her resignation from the post. She will depart on 3 June 2028, after the consecration and ordination of the new diocesan bishop.
In her resignation letter, Bishop Budde stated that she had discerned, in consultation with diocesan leadership and the Presiding Bishop’s office, that it was time to prepare for the election of her successor. The standing committee is expected to outline the necessary steps next week, including the appointment of two committees.
Bishop Budde, 66, has led the diocese since her election in 2011, making her the first woman to serve as its spiritual leader. She previously served as rector of St John’s Episcopal church in Minneapolis for 18 years.
She gained national attention for calling on Donald Trump to "have mercy" on immigrants and the LGBTQ+ community after his second inauguration. Trump responded on social media, demanding an apology and criticising her statements and the service.
Bishop Budde also previously expressed outrage over Trump's appearance in front of St John’s Episcopal holding a Bible for a photo during his first term, following federal officers clearing peaceful protesters.
