Equal AI, an Indian startup, has successfully raised $30 million (approximately £23.7 million) in Series B funding to advance its artificial intelligence-powered call assistant. The technology is designed to screen and manage incoming calls, aiming to reduce the burden of unwanted or repetitive communications for individuals in India, where consumers frequently receive numerous calls ranging from spam to financial service queries.
The funding round was spearheaded by Prosus Ventures and Tomales Bay Capital, with additional participation from Think Investments and Valiant Fund. Notable individual investors, including Sameer Nigam, founder of Indian fintech PhonePe, and Zubin Bharti Mittal from Airtel Family Office, also contributed. This latest investment brings Equal AI's total funding to over $42 million (approximately £33.2 million) since its inception in 2022.
Equal AI's call assistant, currently available on Android, has rapidly gained traction since its launch last year, now boasting more than a million monthly active users and over 300,000 daily active users. The application screens incoming calls, displaying the reason for the call and offering quick reply options such as 'Leave the delivery near the door.' Users can also type custom messages for the AI to convey. Furthermore, the app records calls, providing users with a transcript and summary within the platform.
The company, founded by Keshav Reddy, who comes from the prominent GVK conglomerate family, initially focused on data-sharing for financial services and still offers data for financial analysis and 'know your customer' (KYC) verification. Reddy stated that the call assistant was developed in response to the high volume of calls users receive, particularly concerning financial services or job openings, which can be challenging for individuals to manage.
Looking ahead, Equal AI plans to expand the assistant's capabilities to include screening calls from known numbers and taking proactive actions on a user's behalf, such as sending an address to a delivery person with consent or making outbound calls for appointments. The startup is also developing an iOS version of the app and a paid subscription tier with enhanced features. The technology supports over 10 languages, addressing the linguistic diversity and 'code-mixing' common in India.
While the immediate focus is on the Indian market, the success and technological advancements of companies like Equal AI highlight the global trend towards AI-driven solutions for everyday challenges. For UK businesses and consumers, such innovations demonstrate the potential for similar services to emerge or be adapted, influencing how digital communication is managed and how personal data is handled in an increasingly interconnected world.
