Russell Manning, the prominent founder of Northern Estate Agencies Group and Manning Stainton, has been appointed a Member of the Order of the British Empire (MBE) in the recent King's Birthday Honours List. This prestigious recognition acknowledges his profound dedication to community and charitable causes, spanning more than three decades of voluntary service primarily within Leeds and its surrounding areas.
Mr Manning is widely recognised within the property sector for establishing Manning Stainton, an independent estate agency that grew to become one of the largest in the North of England. This business later integrated into the Northern Estate Agencies Group, which subsequently brought together other well-known brands such as Ryder & Dutton and Mortimers, before eventually joining LRG. While his professional achievements are significant, the MBE specifically highlights his commitment beyond the commercial sphere.
Alongside his successful career in property, Mr Manning has held numerous voluntary positions, demonstrating a deep commitment to local welfare. He has served with organisations including the Leeds Jewish Welfare Board, the Leeds Jewish Housing Association, and the United Hebrew Congregation. Notably, he chaired both the Leeds Jewish Welfare Board and the Leeds Jewish Housing Association, organisations critical for providing housing, care, and welfare services to diverse local communities.
His philanthropic efforts also extend to supporting national charities. Manning Stainton, under his influence, has been a significant fundraiser for Macmillan Cancer Support. Since 2012, the agency has collectively raised over £250,000 for the charity through various fundraising initiatives, reflecting a corporate culture of giving back to the community that Mr Manning fostered.
Speaking about the honour, Mr Manning expressed his humility, stating that Leeds has been his lifelong home and it has been a privilege to support organisations vital to many. He emphasised that the recognition is a collective one, belonging to all the trustees, volunteers, colleagues, supporters, friends, and family who have worked alongside him to make a tangible difference in people's lives.
Mark Manning, Russell's son and the managing director of Northern Estate Agencies Group, highlighted the pride felt by the family and business associates. He noted that while his father is known for his estate agency career and for building a business with strong values, the MBE is particularly deserved for his impact far beyond business, underscoring his belief that a successful business should be a force for good.
