Esther Rantzen has announced she is now too physically fragile to travel to Switzerland to end her life. The 86-year-old broadcaster, who was diagnosed with terminal lung cancer in 2023, had planned to go to a Dignitas assisted dying clinic.
Rantzen stated on Thursday that her quality of life has deteriorated since her diagnosis. She explained that when she was strong enough to travel, her life was not unbearably painful, but by the time it became unbearable, she was too fragile to make the journey and complete the Dignitas process.
Assisted dying is currently illegal in the UK, although a bill that would permit it in certain circumstances is being revisited. Rantzen is a supporter of this bill, which is scheduled for a second reading in parliament on Friday. She has criticised the existing laws, describing them as "messy and cruel".
The debate around legalised assisted dying in the UK has been ongoing since Kim Leadbeater's bill was introduced in October 2024. A vote in the Commons in June 2025 saw the bill progress by 314 votes to 291.
