Eton College is making a significant departure from its traditional focus on academic excellence under its new headmaster, Simon Henderson. At 39, Mr Henderson is the youngest head to take the helm at one of Britain's most elite private schools, and he's brought with him a clear vision for prioritising emotional intelligence and wellbeing among pupils.
Mr Henderson's emphasis on building resilience and confidence in young people reflects a growing awareness of the importance of mental health in an increasingly challenging world. He believes that education should equip students for fulfilling lives, not just academic success, and is keen to see Eton adapt its approach to meet this changing landscape.
The headmaster has committed to 'incremental change', rather than a radical overhaul, aiming to balance tradition with modern educational needs. This includes reviewing the school's practices and ensuring that they withstand scrutiny, while maintaining excellent academic standards remains crucial.
Eton is also set to increase its bursary provision, with Mr Henderson keen to expand financial support for talented pupils from low-income backgrounds. The current annual cost of an Eton education is approximately £35,000, but the school already allocates £6.5 million to means-tested bursaries, supporting 73 pupils with full fee coverage and another 270 with significant financial assistance.
Mr Henderson's vision for modernising the school extends beyond its curriculum, with plans to integrate technology into teaching, promote creative arts, and foster partnerships within the local community. He wants to open up facilities, encourage community service, and ensure better access to sports for all pupils, regardless of their abilities or backgrounds.
