The news has shaken the prestigious Berkshire institution of Eton College, where a former teacher's guilty verdict for sexually assaulting a pupil has been met with a public apology from the headteacher. Jacob Leland, 37, who taught Russian at the school, was sentenced to three years and three months on Friday after being found guilty of three counts of sexual assault on a male.
The assaults occurred in 2012, when Leland was just 23 years old. According to evidence presented at Reading Crown Court, the abuse began when he invited the pupil and his friends to his flat, providing them with alcohol and cigarettes. After the victim's friends left, Leland kissed him and then made him place his hands over Leland's groin. A further incident occurred during a school trip, where Leland performed oral sex on the boy.
Simon Henderson, Eton's current headmaster, acknowledged the severity of the situation in a statement, expressing his "appalled" reaction to learning about the abuse that took place while he was not in post. He reiterated his "unreserved apologies" on behalf of the school to those directly affected by Leland's actions, emphasizing their right to feel safe and secure within the school environment.
During sentencing, Judge Real highlighted the significant responsibility inherent in the teacher-student relationship, which the victim was entitled to trust. The court heard that Leland had been entrusted by a housemaster with caring for students and adhering to school rules. The judge also noted the "long-lasting and serious" psychological effects of Leland's abuse on the victim.
Mr Henderson reaffirmed Eton's commitment to pupil welfare, stating that safeguarding is their top priority. He confirmed that established processes are in place to handle such issues and that the school works closely with external authorities when necessary, as was done in this case.
Eton College, one of England's largest boarding schools, boasts an impressive alumni list featuring members of the Royal Family and former Prime Ministers.
