The head of the European Commission, Ursula von der Leyen, has confirmed plans to move forward with a draft law for a social media ban for children under 13. She stated on Wednesday that social media applications were "depriving children of their childhood" and that large technology platforms must demonstrate the safety of their products.
The proposed draft law would also allow children aged 13-15 to have "mini accounts" under parental supervision, with time limits imposed on app usage. The commission is scheduled to publish its social media plan on Thursday.
For the plan to become law, it will need to be agreed upon by the European Parliament and all 27 EU member states. Von der Leyen also mentioned that the commission's Digital Fairness Act, expected later this year, will address features like addictive design.
