Positions on migration once associated with the radical right have travelled beyond it into the European political mainstream, according to Giuseppe Martinico, a professor of comparative public law at the Dirpolis Institute, Sant’Anna School of Advanced Studies, Pisa, Italy.
Professor Martinico suggests that a broader cultural shift is occurring, with parts of the centre-left and centre-right progressively abandoning a rights-based understanding of migration. He cites the convergence between governments such as Denmark and Italy as an example of this trend.
He also states that the European Commission's political authority appears to have weakened, referencing its response to the Ceuta crisis. Professor Martinico notes that neither Commission President Ursula von der Leyen nor European Commissioner for Internal Affairs and Migration Magnus Brunner provided a strong political signal to counterbalance national positions.
