A EuroMillions lottery winner, Anthony Canty, has died from a fatal traumatic brain injury after being involved in a suspected hit-and-run incident in Tiptree, Essex. The 39-year-old, who famously scooped a £1 million jackpot in 2020, passed away in hospital four days after the collision on 21st May.
Mr Canty was cycling along Maldon Road, near the junction with Braxted Park Road and Grove Park Road, at approximately 06:30 BST when he was struck by a motor car travelling in the same direction. Emergency services were called to the scene, and he was transported to the Royal London Hospital, where he was pronounced dead on 25th May at 18:11.
Area coroner Michelle Brown, opening the inquest at Essex Coroner's Court in Chelmsford, stated that Mr Canty's provisional cause of death was craniocervical disassociation and a traumatic brain injury. The inquest has been suspended for four months to allow detectives to continue their inquiries into the circumstances surrounding his death.
An 18-year-old male driver of a Ford KA was arrested in connection with the collision. Essex Police confirmed the man was apprehended on suspicion of causing serious injury by dangerous driving, driving while unfit through drink or drugs, and failing to stop at the scene of an accident. He has since been released under investigation as police continue their work.
Mr Canty, a father-of-two from Tiptree, made national headlines when he and his partner, Katie Sullivan, won the substantial EuroMillions prize on 5th May 2020. This significant win came just days after he had been praised for a 'Good Samaritan' deed, further highlighting his story in the media.
