The 2026 European Athletics Championships commence today, 10 August, in Birmingham, with events scheduled to run until 16 August at the Alexander Stadium. This marks the first occasion the championships have been hosted in the UK.

A strong field of European athletes is expected, including Olympic 800m champion Keely Hodgkinson and reigning European 100m champion Dina Asher-Smith. Hodgkinson is set to compete in the 800m, facing competition from Switzerland's Audrey Werro and Femke Broeders-Bol. Asher-Smith will defend her 100m title, with world 200m silver medallist Amy Hunt also representing British hopes. Olympic 5,000m champion Jakob Ingebrigtsen of Norway will make his return from injury, having not competed in 2026.

Today's schedule includes events such as the women's shot put, men's hammer throw, and men's 800m in the morning. Evening finals on Monday include the men's shot put, men's 5000m, mixed 4x400m relay, and women's 100m. In total, 10 reigning world champions, including pole vaulter Mondo Duplantis, are scheduled to participate.
