A significant rival to Keely Hodgkinson for European 800m gold has been dramatically put through to Friday’s final. The athlete was tripped and sent sprawling during Thursday’s first semi-final, ensuring the highly anticipated showdown remains on.

This means the clash between Olympic gold medallist Hodgkinson, 22-year-old Swiss athlete Audrey Werro, and the Netherlands’ Femke Broeders-Bol is still set to take place. Werro ran the third fastest time in history in June, while Broeders-Bol is the 400m hurdles world champion who has moved up in distance this season.

Thursday night's programme in Birmingham is also set to feature an exhilarating women’s 200m showdown. Great Britain will be represented by Amy Jones, Dina Asher-Smith, and Success Eduan in this keenly anticipated race, scheduled for 9.50pm UK time.
