Water levels across several of Europe’s major waterways have dropped to exceptionally low levels, setting new records in some areas. This situation is attributed to extreme heat, exacerbated by the climate crisis, intensifying drought across the continent.
The hot atmosphere is rapidly evaporating water from rivers, lakes, soils, and plants. The Danube has recorded its lowest water level in 30 years in several countries, including Hungary, Serbia, and Romania. Additionally, the Rhine has dropped to its lowest recorded level in some sections and is expected to decline further due to the ongoing drought.
