Eurostar's vital links between the UK and the Netherlands are severely crippled until at least Friday due to a devastating fire near Rotterdam Central station. A cable duct blaze that erupted on Monday caused widespread destruction to rail infrastructure and knocked out major power supplies.
As a direct result, all Eurostar trains connecting London with Amsterdam and Rotterdam have been cancelled. However, limited services will continue between France and Amsterdam but will bypass damaged sections of track, forcing passengers into lengthy detours and significantly reduced seating capacity.
Eurostar is urging customers to postpone or cancel non-essential travel to the Netherlands, offering flexible rebooking options for affected bookings made on 30 June, 1 July, or 2 July. Passengers have three months from their original travel date to claim a refund, exchange tickets for alternative dates, or opt for an e-voucher valid until 12 months after issue.
The UK Foreign Office has updated its advice for the Netherlands, acknowledging the severe disruption to Eurostar services and urging travellers not to attempt journeys via Eurostar until July 3rd, though this appears to be a clerical error likely referring to July 2024. Passengers are advised to verify their travel plans with booking operators before attempting to cross the channel.
Meanwhile, Eurostar services between London St Pancras and Paris Gare du Nord remain relatively unaffected but may experience minor delays. The fire starkly highlights the risks faced by critical infrastructure and the profound impact that disruptions can have on global travel networks.
