Prosecutors in Colombia have accused former foreign minister Laura Sarabia of abusing her power. The accusation stems from allegations that she ordered police to subject her nanny to a lie detector test.
The scandal, which first emerged in 2023, involves the alleged disappearance of several thousands of dollars in cash from Ms Sarabia's flat. Prosecutors claim Ms Sarabia, who was then chief of staff to President Gustavo Petro, improperly used state resources to investigate a personal matter.
Marelbys Meza, the nanny, reportedly told news weekly Semana that she was taken to an official building and questioned by police officers using a polygraph machine. Ms Meza has consistently denied stealing any money.
Ms Sarabia, who later served as foreign minister and then as Colombia's ambassador to the UK, has denied any wrongdoing. She rejected the accusation during a hearing, stating her lawyers were handling the issue and that she respected judicial authorities.
