Bangladesh's ousted prime minister, Sheikh Hasina, has announced her intention to return home by the end of the year, despite facing a death sentence. The 78-year-old, who has been living in India, stated on Wednesday that she would return in December, which she referred to as Bangladesh's "month of victory."
Hasina's government was overthrown two years ago following a student-led uprising. Last November, Bangladesh's international crimes tribunal sentenced her to death in absentia for crimes against humanity, related to the violent suppression of protests. She has rejected the verdict, calling it politically motivated, and affirmed that the execution threat would not alter her plans.
Her son, Sajeeb Wazed Joy, stated that she is receiving full services and security as a head of state in India. India has officially distanced itself from the news conference where Hasina made her announcement, stating it had no role in its organisation or endorsement of the political views expressed.
