An expert panel has met to discuss the selection of wildlife imagery for new banknotes. The panel, comprising representatives from various organisations, met on 10 March 2026 to consider the criteria for selecting animals to appear on the new banknotes. According to the minutes of the meeting, the panel discussed the importance of security, usability, durability, and accessibility, as well as representation of cultural and national identity.
The panel also considered the stages of banknote production, including theme and imagery selection, development of security features, detailed design, manufacturing, and issuance. During the meeting, the panel was reminded of the Terms of Reference and the Public Sector Equality Duty, which the Bank of England is required to follow.
The panel discussed the proposed guidance for nominating animals, including that they should be wild, varied, symbolise the UK, be distinctive, be recognisable, and be inclusive. Some panel members suggested that a habitat and taxonomy-based framework could be considered when nominating animals, while others advocated for the inclusion of birds and insects. The panel also discussed whether there should be consideration around conservation status when considering nominations.
The panel's next steps include supporting the launch of the second consultation on 3rd June at a nature-themed venue and providing input on the nomination form. The Bank of England plans to launch the second consultation, which will allow the public to vote on the selected animals.
