Experts Advise Less Frequent Washing to Prolong Clothing Life

Fashion editor Hannah Rochell and author Laura de Barra suggest that washing clothes less often can help them last longer, citing the potential for damage from frequent laundering.

  • Washing clothes too often can reduce a garment's lifespan due to water, detergent, heat, and mechanical action.
  • Spot cleaning with washing-up liquid can address specific stains without full machine washing.
  • When machine washing, choosing gentler cycles and suitable detergents can help protect clothing fibres and dyes.

Experts are advising consumers to wash their clothes less frequently to extend their lifespan. Fashion editor Hannah Rochell noted her own practice of rarely washing certain items, while Laura de Barra, author of Garment Goddess, explained that while washing machines clean, overwashing can reduce a garment's life.

Ecover's laundry expert supported this view, stating that water, detergent, heat, and the mechanical action of washing machines can lead to colour fading, fibre loss, and changes in shape. They suggest washing only when necessary and opting for cooler, shorter, or gentler cycles to maintain clothes and reduce energy and water use.

For minor spills, spot cleaning is recommended. Laura de Barra suggests using washing-up liquid and a white cloth to dab at stains, transferring the stain from the garment. When machine washing is unavoidable, choosing the gentlest suitable cycle and a kind detergent that works with cool temperatures can help protect clothing.

What this means for you: Adopting less frequent washing and spot cleaning could help your clothes last longer and potentially reduce your household's water and energy consumption.
