Claims from individuals within the AI industry suggest a 10% probability that artificial intelligence could lead to the extinction of humanity within the next decade. However, these warnings have been met with scepticism from some experts.
Professor Alan Woodward from the University of Surrey’s centre for cybersecurity described the idea of AI bots taking over with their own free will as 'bizarre nonsense'. He stated that 'The AIs would not decide to do it on their own,' emphasising that humans are responsible and AI is a tool that needs to be controlled.
The industry appears divided on how to proceed amidst global concerns about the rapid evolution of AI. Pedro Domingos, an emeritus professor of computer science at the University of Washington, advocates for increased research, stating, 'The path to better understanding and control of AI is more research, not less.'
