  • Explora III is the third ship from Explora Journeys and is powered by sustainable liquified natural gas (LNG).
  • The ship is 268 metres long and 14 storeys high, offering more suites and public spaces than previous Explora ships.
  • Luxury cruise passenger numbers have tripled since 2015, reaching over 1.2 million last year.

Explora Journeys has introduced its third luxury cruise ship, Explora III, which is now sailing in the Mediterranean. The 268-metre long vessel, standing 14 storeys high, is powered by sustainable liquified natural gas (LNG).

Explora III is longer than its two sister ships, a design choice made to accommodate larger fuel tanks for its LNG power. This additional length has allowed for more suites and public spaces, including new features such as a wine tasting room, a private dining room, and an alfresco cigar lounge.

The ship has a capacity for 922 passengers and carries approximately 700 staff members. It offers seven restaurants, including Marble & Co, Sakura, and Anthology, with the latter incurring an additional cost of £141 per person for certain dishes.

Explora Journeys is part of the Italo-Swiss family-owned MSC Group. The company plans to build another three ships in the next two years, reflecting a trend of growth in the luxury cruise sector, which has seen passenger numbers triple since 2015 to over 1.2 million last year.

Why this matters: The launch of Explora III highlights the continued expansion of the luxury cruise market, which has seen significant growth in passenger numbers and ship construction since 2015.
