The UK is set to sizzle this week as a sweltering heatwave bears down on the country, with temperatures forecast to soar to a scorching 37°C. An extreme heat warning has been issued by the Met Office, affecting much of central and southern England where the hot air mass will linger longest.
Forecasters predict that mercury will rise steadily throughout the week, peaking on Thursday and Friday when thermometers in London and the South East are expected to reach their highest levels. Elsewhere, temperatures will also climb significantly, although they're unlikely to exceed 30°C in Scotland, Wales, or Northern Ireland.
As health experts warn of potential risks for vulnerable individuals – including older people, young children, and those with pre-existing medical conditions – the Met Office advises that people should take extra precautions. This includes staying hydrated, avoiding strenuous activity between 11 am and 3 pm, and seeking shade whenever possible.
Employers are being urged to ensure workplaces are cool and safe, while schools are advised to take precautions to prevent heat-related issues among students. Pet owners are also reminded to provide their animals with access to water and shade, as the hot weather takes hold.
Meteorologists predict that the worst of the heat will pass by mid-week, but warmer-than-average temperatures could persist into the weekend. However, isolated thunderstorms may develop in some areas towards the end of the week, which could bring relief from the heat but also introduce their own hazards.
