Eyebright's tiny white flowers with purple markings are currently carpeting short-turf habitats like Old Racecourse Common in Shropshire. This innocuous-looking wildflower has a profound secret: it's both an ancient medicinal herb and a subtle parasite that siphons resources from UK grasslands.
There are approximately 20 species of eyebright (Euphrasia) native to Britain, with some being endemic. The intricate genetic make-up, comprising numerous microspecies and hybrids, makes identification by experts a considerable challenge. Collectively, they're often referred to as Euphrasia officinalis agg, an aggregate group belonging to the Orobanchaceae family – also home to other hemi-parasitic species like lousewort and yellow rattle.
As a hemi-parasite, eyebright is capable of photosynthesis but relies on nearby grasses for essential nutrients and water. By penetrating their roots, it effectively 'steals' resources, altering the local ecosystem and reducing grass dominance – with a ripple effect on diversity and turf composition.
Eyebright's medicinal past is equally fascinating. Its Greek name, Euphrasia ('cheerfulness'), reflects its bright flowers. Following the medieval Doctrine of Signatures, eyebright was linked to eye health due to its appearance. Remedies like tinctures and compresses containing compounds like aucubin and flavonoids were used to treat various eye problems – with some even associating it with general wellbeing and divination.
However, the future of eyebright and its habitats is under threat. Declines in traditional grazing practices and encroachment by aggressive species like bracken risk eroding short-turf environments where eyebright thrives. Conservation efforts must therefore consider preserving not just individual eyebright species but also the ecological processes – such as controlled grazing – that maintain these diverse habitats.
