Facebook, part of Meta Platforms, is introducing a suite of updates aimed at enhancing user engagement and organisation, including a new dedicated application for its burgeoning Marketplace platform. The company today unveiled 'Seller', a standalone app designed specifically for individuals who frequently list and sell items, alongside a new free identity verification system for its social services.
Marketplace has become a significant draw for users, particularly younger demographics, boasting over 430 million monthly listings. The new 'Seller' app seeks to capitalise on this momentum by providing a more streamlined experience for power users. It will allow sellers to efficiently manage their listings, communicate with potential buyers, and monitor the performance of their items, moving these functions out of the main Facebook application into a dedicated environment.
In a move to bolster trust and authenticity across its platforms, Facebook is also launching 'Facebook Verified'. This free system enables users to verify their identity by taking a selfie, with a distinct verification mark then appearing on their profiles within Facebook Dating, Marketplace, and Groups. This is separate from 'Meta Verified', a paid subscription service offering a blue badge and additional features. The introduction of a free verification option could be a response to ongoing concerns about bots and fake profiles, particularly relevant for transactional platforms like Marketplace and personal connection services like Dating.
Beyond these seller-focused and verification updates, Facebook is experimenting with a more immersive, full-screen video interface for its primary app. This optional feature, which activates upon opening the app, is initially being trialled in video-heavy international markets before a planned rollout to the US next year. Users will have the option to revert to the traditional feed-based interface if they prefer. This mirrors similar tests conducted by Meta with Instagram, indicating a broader strategic push towards video content across its platforms.
These developments underscore Meta's ongoing strategy of developing niche applications to cater to diverse user needs. Recent months have seen the debut of 'Forum', a Reddit-like app for Facebook Groups, and 'Pocket', a 'vibe-coding' app. Looking ahead, Facebook has indicated plans to integrate artificial intelligence into the 'Seller' app, aiming to automate tasks such as generating item descriptions and facilitating searches within groups to answer buyer queries, further enhancing efficiency for sellers.
