Ferrari's first all-electric car, the Luce, has been sold for $40m (£29.5m) at a Sotheby's charity auction in California. This price, equivalent to £29.5m, sets a new record for a new car sold at auction.

The sale generated more than 35 times the usual price of a Ferrari Luce. Sotheby's confirmed that all proceeds from the auction will be donated to the Ferrari Foundation's educational programmes.

The auctioned vehicle is a special model, described in the auction catalogue as featuring a unique finish and bespoke parts, including special wheels, customised brakes, and an exclusive white finish. Sotheby's did not disclose the buyer's identity.

Designed by Sir Jony Ive, the Luce faced criticism upon its launch in May, with some commentators suggesting it deviated from Ferrari's traditional designs and identity due to its battery power and five seats. Despite this, its unveiling was considered one of the most significant new car launches in recent years, marking Ferrari's entry into the electric vehicle market.

Why this matters: The sale marks Ferrari's first entry into the electric vehicle market, a sector currently dominated by Tesla and Chinese carmakers.
