Football's global governing body, Fifa, has announced its intention to proceed with proposals to sell stakes in its tournaments to private investors, despite a boycott threat from Uefa. Fifa stated on Friday that "nobody is selling football" and confirmed that a consultation period will continue ahead of a vote scheduled for 19 September.
On Thursday, Uefa, representing 55 member associations, declared it would boycott the World Cup and all Fifa competitions if Gianni Infantino's plans to privatise major tournaments are approved. Concacaf, representing 41 nations from North and Central America and the Caribbean, has also rejected the proposal.
The first senior tournament that could be affected by Uefa's boycott is the 2027 Fifa Women’s World Cup, set to take place in Brazil between 24 June and 25 July next year. Europe has 11 guaranteed slots in the 32-team competition.
