Fifa has revealed a substantial overhaul of the pre-match national anthem ceremony for the upcoming 2026 World Cup, designed to create a more immersive and unified experience for both players and spectators. The changes, described as 'fan-centric', will see every player selected in the matchday squad involved in the ceremony, moving beyond the traditional focus solely on the starting XI.
Under the new format, all players and match officials will gather around a centre circle banner, facing each other during the national anthems. This adjustment aims to maximise the sense of pride and emotion for those representing their nations on football's grandest stage. Fifa President Gianni Infantino stated that as the World Cup expands, the organisation continues to innovate the fan experience, with the 2026 pre-match ceremonies being a prime example.
The revamp extends beyond player involvement, encompassing a redesigned '360-degree concept' for the stadium experience. This includes extra-large country flag banners, similar to those seen in NFL matches, which will cover nearly half the pitch. New visual elements, such as player entry arches and handheld flags, are also planned to heighten anticipation. Fifa claims this comprehensive approach is geared towards enhancing the value of every seat in the stadium, ensuring a unique and immersive experience from all vantage points.
For matches later in the tournament, the pre-match ceremony could be further enhanced with the inclusion of coloured smoke or pyrotechnics, adding another layer of spectacle. Despite these significant changes, some traditional elements will remain. The customary handshakes between teams, team photos of the starting line-ups, and the captains' coin toss will still follow the national anthems.
The move is intended to foster a greater sense of unity and shared emotion, with Infantino emphasising that the new ceremony reflects that the World Cup is about 'every player and every fan'. The changes represent a concerted effort by Fifa to evolve the tournament's presentation, ensuring it continues to captivate a global audience while honouring the significance of national representation.
