Design platform Figma has introduced a new Markdown-based editor, Figma Specs, and made its code layers feature available in open beta. These updates aim to help define design language and integrate coding into designs.

  • Figma has launched Figma Specs, a Markdown editor for defining design language.
  • The code layers feature, which adds coding to designs, is now in open beta.
  • Figma is integrating its acquired headless CMS, Payload, with its Figma Make product.

Design platform Figma has announced new features, including a Markdown-based editor called Figma Specs, at its first Config event in India. Figma Specs allows users to define their design language, serving as a reference for teams and agents working within the platform. The editor can exist as a standalone file or within the canvas, and can reference other Figma elements, embed FigJam diagrams, code layers, and designs.

The company has also made its code layers feature available in open beta, allowing users to add coding to designs on canvas for more interactive prototypes. This feature was previously in private beta since June. Users can also instruct agents to convert designs into code or modify existing code to iterate on prototypes.

Figma is integrating Payload, the open-source headless content management system it acquired last year, with its Figma Make product. This integration aims to facilitate the generation of dynamic websites and direct content management. The company noted that Payload's downloads have increased sixfold over the past 12 months.
