The third and final shipment of high-level vitrified nuclear waste from the UK has been safely delivered to a federal storage facility in Germany, marking the completion of a significant international obligation. The consignment, which arrived at the Brokdorf facility on 18 June 2024, concludes a series of transfers returning reprocessed nuclear material to its country of origin.
This latest operation involved the transportation of seven specialised flasks containing vitrified residues from the Sellafield site in Cumbria. The flasks were initially moved by rail to the port of Barrow-in-Furness, where they were then loaded onto the Pacific Grebe, a specialist nuclear transport vessel operated by Nuclear Transport Solutions (NTS). Following its sea journey, the waste was transferred by road within Germany to its final destination.
The waste being returned is a byproduct of the reprocessing and recycling of spent nuclear fuel at Sellafield. This fuel had originally been used by German utilities to generate electricity, with the UK undertaking the reprocessing as part of long-standing international contracts. These 'Vitrified Residue Returns' are a core element of the UK's broader strategy to manage high-level waste, meet its commitments to overseas partners, and align with established government policy.
Jonathan Clingan, Programme Manager at Sellafield Ltd, confirmed the completion of this final shipment for German customers. He highlighted the collaborative effort involved, stating, "Thanks to the excellent work of various teams at Sellafield Ltd, NTS and other partners in the UK and overseas, we have safely delivered a key milestone in the UK Government’s commitment to returning waste to overseas customers."
The successful completion of this return programme underscores the UK's adherence to international nuclear safety regulations and its capabilities in handling and transporting high-level radioactive materials. It also demonstrates progress in addressing the legacy of nuclear reprocessing and fulfilling contractual agreements that have been in place for decades.
