Welsh cyclist Emma Finucane is set to compete at the World Track Championships in Shanghai, China, this week. The 23-year-old, who previously won four Commonwealth Games golds for Wales, is aiming for more gold medals at her fifth World Championships.

Finucane is part of a 19-strong British team participating in the event, which runs from Wednesday to Sunday. These championships are significant as they are the first to count towards qualification for the 2028 Los Angeles Olympics.

Finucane will ride in the team sprint, individual sprint, and keirin. She has expressed a desire to regain the world champion's rainbow stripes after securing two silver medals last year, a result she described as "disappointing."

The cyclist also shared her approach to performance, stating, "Ultimately when I feel confident and unstoppable on the track, I feel like I can do anything." She noted the importance of "fashion, speed and science" in her preparation, drawing inspiration from athletes like Keely Hodgkinson and Amy Hunt.

Why this matters: The World Track Championships are the initial event contributing to qualification for the 2028 Los Angeles Olympics, making them a crucial stepping stone for athletes like Finucane.
