Fiorentina's centenary celebrations culminated in a chastening 3-0 home defeat to newly-promoted Frosinone on Saturday, marking the club's worst-ever start to a Serie A season. This loss followed an opening 4-0 drubbing by Roma, meaning Fiorentina have now lost their first two games by a combined seven goals, a first in their top-flight history.
The club, founded on 29 August 1926, had been celebrating its 100th birthday for four days. Festivities included a fan procession through Florence, a firework show, and historic city monuments illuminated in purple. Club president Giuseppe Commisso and former players like Borja Valero were part of the celebrations, and a lunch for former players and coaches, including Gabriel Batistuta and Rui Costa, was held before the match.
Despite significant investment in new talent, including Christ Inao Oulaï, Víctor Valdepeñas, Arthur Atta, Mateo Pellegrino, and loan signings Franco Mastantuono, Radu Dragusin, and Álex Jiménez, the team under new manager Fabio Grosso struggled. Frosinone's Antonio Raimondo scored twice, with Gabriele Bracaglia adding another, to secure an astonishing victory for a team that narrowly avoided relegation to Italy's third tier in 2025.
