A significant fire has erupted at a recycling plant in Deptford, south-east London, marking the second major incident at the site this summer. Around 100 firefighters and 15 fire engines are currently tackling the blaze on Landmann Way, which involves approximately 50 tonnes of household waste.
The London Fire Brigade was first alerted just before 8pm. Crews from East Greenwich, Old Kent Road, Deptford, and surrounding stations are in attendance. Station commander Duncan Rees stated that fire crews and partner blue light services are working in difficult conditions to bring the fire under control, utilising 32-metre and 64-metre turntable ladders as water towers.
Smoke and flames have been seen billowing above nearby buildings, close to a railway line. National Rail has confirmed that rail services into London Bridge from New Cross are affected due to blocked railway lines. Members of the public are advised to avoid the area and keep windows and doors closed due to the smoke. The cause of the blaze is currently unknown.
The same facility experienced a fire in June, which destroyed a van and a car, and led to one man receiving treatment from the London Ambulance Service.
