The delivery of the first consignment of UK-made artillery barrels to Ukraine marks a significant turning point in Britain's defence commitment to its embattled neighbour. This move, part of a £61 million contract with BAE Systems, is not only bolstering hundreds of skilled jobs across Yorkshire and beyond but also reasserts the UK's sovereign steelmaking capabilities.
This milestone has been achieved through production centred at Sheffield Forgemasters, which has taken nearly two decades to revive. The initial four barrels shipped are development forgings, enabling Ukraine to test their own manufacturing processes, with Sheffield Forgemasters now producing eight forgings monthly. These 150 forged artillery barrels – comprising both 105mm and 155mm calibres – will be sent to Ukraine for finishing and integration into their defence systems.
Defence Secretary Dan Jarvis MBE MP recently visited the workforce at Sheffield Forgemasters, where he highlighted the significance of the UK's Defence Investment Plan in delivering national security and stimulating opportunities across the country. With 780 skilled staff on site, Sheffield Forgemasters remains a vital player in critical defence programmes, civil nuclear, and offshore energy sectors.
As part of its £1.3 billion recapitalisation programme, funded by the Ministry of Defence, the company is constructing a new 13,000-tonne forging line and a 30,000 square metre machining hall. This substantial investment aims to strengthen the UK's steelmaking capabilities for defence, encompassing gun barrels and nuclear submarines. This initiative complements BAE Systems' new £25 million artillery factory in Sheffield, which became operational earlier this year and created 100 highly skilled jobs.
The revival of domestic artillery barrel production not only bolsters the UK's defence industrial base but also injects investment into communities nationwide while generating skilled employment opportunities. This strategic move forms a crucial part of the UK's broader package of military support for Ukraine, demonstrating a dual benefit in aiding an ally and stimulating the British economy and manufacturing sector.
