Matt Fitzpatrick has surged into a share of the lead at the Genesis Scottish Open, capitalising on a challenging day for Rory McIlroy amidst significant fog delays at the Renaissance Club. As play was suspended on Saturday with 22 players yet to complete their third rounds, Fitzpatrick stood at 11 under par after eight holes, level with American Michael Thorbjornsen, who had played 13.
McIlroy, who had been tied for first overnight at nine under par and was playing alongside Fitzpatrick, saw his fortunes decline early in the third round. He dropped to six under par after bogeying three of his first seven holes. In contrast, Fitzpatrick, who started the day one shot behind, made a strong start with a birdie on the second hole and added three more before a bogey on the eighth, briefly holding the outright lead.
The day was significantly impacted by dense fog, leading to a two-and-a-half-hour suspension earlier in the day and a further stoppage later on. American Johnny Keefer, who managed to complete his round, posted an impressive six-under-par 64 to set the clubhouse lead at 10 under. By the time play was halted, five other players, including defending champion Chris Gotterup, US Open winner Wyndham Clark, and England's Jordan Smith, had also reached 10 under par but were still on the course.
Scotland's Robert MacIntyre was among three players on nine under par after nine holes. The late starts for the leaders, with McIlroy and Fitzpatrick not teeing off until after 6pm, contributed to the inability to complete the round before darkness, compounded by the earlier fog. The tournament schedule now faces pressure, especially with The Open Championship at Royal Birkdale just a week away, meaning organisers will be keen to avoid a Monday finish.
Play is set to resume at 7am on Sunday for the remaining players to complete their third rounds. The fourth and final round will then follow swiftly, with players grouped in three-balls to expedite proceedings. English golfers Tyrrell Hatton, Danny Willett, and Tommy Fleetwood were all four shots off the lead when play was suspended, keeping them in contention for a strong finish.
