Five men arrested in a village near RAF Fairford on Sunday have been released on bail without immediate charge. The men, all UK nationals from London, were arrested on suspicion of carrying explosives and involvement in a terror plot.
Investigators are still working to determine what led the five men and three vans to the location in the early hours of Sunday. Police became aware of three vehicles travelling to the base at 12:45am on Sunday, and a local farmer contacted 999 at 1:36am after vans blocked her driveway.
After more than 24 hours of searches, nothing was discovered that would prompt further police action. The question of whether Iran had a role in the alleged plot remains open.
RAF Fairford serves as the European home for US air force bombers and has been used in US bombing campaigns against Iran. Iran's Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC) previously stated on 23 July that any bases used by the US to attack Iran, including Fairford, were "legitimate targets."
