Five Northern Ireland boxers are on the cusp of securing a Commonwealth Games medal, with the draw confirming their direct entry into the quarter-final stage. Kaci Rock, Michaela Walsh, Jansseen Hill, Garyn McAllister, and Willie John McCartan will all compete in Glasgow next Tuesday and Wednesday, needing just one win to guarantee at least a bronze medal.
Michaela Walsh, a formidable presence in the featherweight division, is aiming for her fourth consecutive Commonwealth Games podium finish. The Holy Family GG boxer, who secured silver medals in Glasgow in 2014 and the Gold Coast four years later, will face Scotland's Lara Brown in Wednesday's afternoon session. Her extensive experience and past successes make her a strong contender for a medal this year.
The quarter-final schedule is packed with crucial bouts for Team NI. On Tuesday afternoon, welterweight Kaci Rock will go head-to-head with Niue's Karen Te Ruki Pasene. Later that day, heavyweight Garyn McAllister is set to challenge Ghana's Jibril Muntari. Wednesday evening's session at the SEC Centre will see light-heavyweight Jansseen Hill take on England's Chantelle Reid, a 2025 World bronze medallist, while super-heavyweight Willie John McCartan faces Ghana's Daniel Plange.
Other Northern Ireland boxers will begin their campaigns earlier in the tournament. Bantamweight Louis Rooney is the first in action this Friday, 24 July, against Lesotho's Mathealira Seholoholo. Should he win, Rooney would then meet Australia's Jye Dixon on Sunday in the last 16. Nicole Clyde commences her bantamweight challenge on Sunday against Ghana's Nancy Bamfo, and welterweight JP Hale also enters the competition at the last 16 stage, with his opponent yet to be determined.
Monday, 27 July, will see more Team NI talent enter the ring. Jude Gallagher, the 2022 featherweight champion, will make his debut at the last 16 stage in the lightweight category, with his opponent still to be decided. Light-heavyweight Eoghan Quinn is in a similar position. Flyweight Caitlin Fryers will face Bangladesh's Zinnat Ferdous, and light-middleweight Jon McConnell is tasked with a bout against India's Sumit Kundu.
