Bilbao BBK Live commenced its landmark 20th anniversary edition on Friday, 11 July 2026, welcoming thousands of music enthusiasts to the scenic slopes of Mount Cobetas in the Basque Country. The festival, known for attracting a diverse array of creative talent over two decades, began with standout performances from FKA Twigs and David Byrne, both of whom captivated the audience with their unique artistic visions.
FKA Twigs transformed the main stage into an immersive experience, drawing heavily from her recent album, 'Eusexua'. Her performance was a spectacle of movement and visual artistry, featuring poles, harnesses, and a giant bed, alongside a troupe of dancers. The London-born artist, whose work consistently blurs the lines between pop and performance art, delivered an hour of what has been described as visual hedonism, exploring themes of euphoric lust and connection. Moments of vulnerability, such as the title track 'Eusexua' performed with reflective mirrors, balanced the raw intensity of the set.
Following FKA Twigs' provocative show, David Byrne took to the San Miguel stage, offering a contrasting yet equally compelling performance. Byrne, known for his innovative approach to live music, presented an evolution of his highly choreographed and free-spirited shows. His set was characterised by its joyous and wholesome energy, weaving political messages into an uplifting party atmosphere. Both artists, despite their differing styles, showcased their commitment to expanding the possibilities of live musical presentation, each bringing a full company of performers to realise their distinct artistic visions.
Beyond the headliners, the opening day featured a range of acts across the festival's various stages. Spanish rock heroes Alcalá Norte delivered a surprise 'guerrilla-style' set, while rising stars like Hemlocke Springs and Radio Free Alice also performed. The evening culminated in a major headline turn from Calvin Harris, ensuring a dynamic start to the anniversary celebrations. Even a scattering of summer rain failed to dampen the spirits of attendees, adding to the free-spirited atmosphere of the event.
The festival, which has previously hosted global acts such as The xx, Depeche Mode, and Gorillaz, continues its tradition of offering a rich and varied musical programme. Its setting high above Bilbao provides a unique backdrop for what remains one of Europe's premier music weekender events.
